I have a B.A. in Developmental Studies from the University of Winnipeg, and I am an RDI® Program Certified Consultant. (Certified in July, 2007) I have worked as an Educational Assistant to 3 children with autism over the last 6 years, and started my certification in RDI® in May, 2006. I am very pleased to be a part of the program, and have seen families make terrific progress. I like that RDI® follows the research of typical development, and helps fill the specific developmental gaps that children with autism have.

I have been working with children, teenagers and lately, young adults on the spectrum for approximately 16 years. I began by focusing on social skills and emotional self-regulation but found the traditional ways of teaching these skills was not very effective. Over the past three years I have focused on learning and using Relationship Development Intervention®. In RDI®, I operate as a consultant with the parents and coach them about how to be better guides for their autistic child. It is a developmental therapy so I am basically helping them to re-do the typical developmental pathway with their child and fill in the gaps of learning. They are already good parents, they just need to learn how to use those intuitive strategies with their autistic child. Because I am an OT, I am also able to include sensory processing issue within this process. RDI® is a very intense process and requires committed parents that are willing to change aspects of their lifestyle. More information can be found at www.rdiconnect.com

As a parent of a 12 year old child impaired by Autism Spectrum Disorder, I can relate to other parents who like me have to make decisions daily about how to best help their child. I was the first RDI® certified consultant in this province and have been working with families using the RDI® Program for almost 4 years now. I'm also trained to administer the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule - a standard instrument for assessing / diagnosing Autism and PDD across age, development level and language skills). The intent of the RDI® Program is to empower families to be an integral part of their ASD child’s treatment intervention. For me it’s been an exciting experience to see the kids and teenagers I’ve work with make significant progress on the social, emotional and cognitive deficits associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I show my families how to guide children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder in an intuitive, developmentally appropriate way. My goal is to help people with ASD become more flexible, more able to enjoy social interactions, and feel less anxious about their everyday lives. And of course my overall objective is to help my families build a quality of life for their loved ones, where their children may have the opportunity to have fulfilling relationships with their friends and their families.
