About Autism Portage

Autism Portage is a support and educational group that was started in January 2008 to serve parents, relatives, other caregivers, childcare workers, educators and service professionals in the Portage la Prairie (Central Manitoba) region who care for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Autism Portage is an independent group, not directly affiliated with any governmental or service agency. Autism Portage receives no ongoing funding for its activities. Activities are funded through fundraising and donations.

Purpose:

The purpose of Autism Portage is to provide a venue to gain and share support, education and acceptance for those who care for individuals with autism spectrum disorder in the Portage la Prairie, Manitoba (Central Manitoba) region.

Mission and goals

Autism Portage strives to:

- provide a supportive, non-judgmental venue for family and non-family caregivers of individuals with autism spectrum disorders to share ideas, joys and challenges;

- to connect families who share similar experiences to enhance sense of community, acceptance and belonging;

- to connect service professionals with other workers and families to enhance their competence in dealing with their clients with autism spectrum disorder.

- provide the opportunity for education on issues related to autism spectrum disorders through information disseminated via the Autism Portage website, newsletters, e-newsletters and guest speakers;

- increase public awareness of autism spectrum disorders in the community; and

- enhance the social and recreational opportunities of individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families by sponsoring family events throughout the year.

Activities:

Autism Portage offers a variety of activities to support the families and professionals in the Portage la Prairie region. A support group is offered once a month to allow family members and professionals to share their ideas, successes and frustrations in a safe, supportive environment.

Education and information is disseminated through a variety of means. A newsletter and e-Newsletter is distributed to well over 100 families, schools, and service providers every month. A website has been established to provide 24-hour access to information and updates about autism and events in Manitoba.

Family events provide the opportunity for individuals with autism and their families to participate in fun activities (such as swimming, bowling, picnics) in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
